Initial Consultation

Whilst many of us like surprises from time to time, most people also appreciate knowing what is just around the corner. We understand that consulting with any health care professional for the first time can sometimes be a little daunting, so we think it’s helpful to provide a brief outline detailing what a New Patient attending The Perth Brain Centre is likely to experience.

Most patients are referred to The Perth Brain Centre by existing patients or other health professionals and telephone or email to arrange an appointment. In most cases we are able to offer an appointment within 2 or 3 weeks, although in some exceptional circumstances we may be able to arrange an appointment sooner if necessary.

Prior to the initial consultation, all New Patients are contacted (usually by email) to confirm the appointment day and time. We will also provide important background information about the clinic such as details about parking and payment options. In addition, New Patients are sent (usually by email) a detailed New Patient Questionnaire to complete and bring to their initial appointment.

The initial consultation usually takes approximately 40 minutes and the first part is focussed upon taking a detailed Case History. All patients are given the opportunity to discuss their case in detail. In a relaxed atmosphere, we will ask questions relating to all aspects of your health and well-being, ranging from general lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep and stress-management to very detailed questions relating to your specific problem. Once we are confident that we have all the information required from your history we will proceed to your physical examination. We respect your privacy and patients remain clothed at all times, although it may be necessary to remove your shoes and socks or roll up your sleeves. The physical examination covers a wide range of tests, ranging from general observation of balance, co-ordination, posture and gait (walking) and cardio-respiratory tests (blood pressure and breathing rate), to detailed evaluation of your Peripheral Nervous System (the nerves in your face, arms and legs) and Central Nervous System (the nerves in your spinal cord and brain). In some cases we will proceed directly to a QEEG Brain Scan which takes an additional 40 minutes, and in other instances we may arrange this for another occasion.

During your entire consultation you are welcome to ask questions and at the end of this first visit you be given an additional opportunity to discuss anything related to your case. In most circumstances we will then recommend that we schedule a second appointment, known as a Report of Findings. During this Report of Findings we will summarise the key findings in your history and examination, outline the results of your QEEG Brain Scan, provide a diagnosis and outline our recommendations for treatment.
