ADHD Confirmed to be a Brain Disorder
We have known for some time that ADHD is a brain disorder characterised by a number of problems including disturbances in chemistry (neurotransmitters) and electrical activity (brainwaves) that lead to changes in normal brain function, affecting key networks in the brain controlling attention and impulse-control.
We have also known for a while that the brains of people with ADHD are structurally different. Scans of people with ADHD have previously shown less grey matter (brain cells) and white matter (the connecting pathways) in the cortex (the “top” part of the brain), especially at the front (a region known as the pre-frontal cortex).
There is something deeply satisfying about ticking off the last item on the school booklist, and walking through the doors of Officeworks with a trolley full of potential. Earlier this month was OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and Anxiety Awareness week in Victoria. However, with nearly 240,000 people in Western Australia experiencing anxiety this year it seems really important to talk about anxiety disorders here as well.
The best way to learn about someone is to take the time to listen to their story, the best way to understand someone is to step into their shoes. It is important for all of us to feel understood, this way we break down barriers and we find solutions. August brings a time to build our awareness of anxiety disorders, so, first, we went looking for real people’s descriptions of what anxiety feels like:
In one article from The Independent a woman explained the constant feeling of being anxious ‘as if she tripped and the moment where you don't know if you are going to catch yourself or not is how she felt all day long', and someone else describes ‘[It’s like] when you tap your pocket to get your wallet, and it is not there (and like the woman above said), it’s like that all the time.’
For some, particularly those living right now with a chronic pain experience, this may be a painful question to read…it may be one that has been posed by a health professional sitting across a desk in front of you…it may have felt, and still feel, unfathomable that they could have said that to you…they may not have known the truth in their statement, but we are going to explain it to you now. We feel pretty confident you will feel better informed, and hopefully, even a bit better after you have thought about it…
I have just returned from The 2018 International Neurorehabilitation Conference in Boston run by Harvard Medical School. I was one of hundreds of delegates from all over the world attending to get the latest updates on cutting-edge treatments to help people with brain problems. We had experts presenting on a large range of topics ranging from neuroplasticity to proven and state-of-the-art brain therapies.

Deciding what to eat can be an enormously effortful task. Aside from the vast choice available to us, we are also informed (not always necessarily well informed) about the choices we think we should be making…paleo this, low FODMAP that, raw something else, oops now I’m a flexitarian…the pleasure of eating can be spoilt by complexity sometimes. This is not to deride these choices, indeed they work well for some.
Most children with Autism are also facing additional challenges like ADHD and Anxiety, and one third have Epilepsy. It appears that this is caused by a gene mutation which is also associated with language delay and intellectual disability.
A very large international study just published in The Lancet Psychiatry has shown that additional brain areas, beneath the main cortex, are also smaller in those people with ADHD.
This new study measured the differences in the brain structure of over 1,700 people with a diagnosis of ADHD and over 1,500 people without, all aged between 4 and 63 years old. Researchers were looking very carefully at the size of the sub-cortical nuclei (brain regions below the main cortex) and found that these were smaller in those people with ADHD, especially children. The sub-cortical nuclei are also involved in attention and self-regulation.
This further supports our understanding that ADHD is a developmental brain disorder, and not just a label given to “difficult” children or caused by poor parenting.
How common is ADHD ?
ADHD is the most common mental health problem affecting children, affecting 300,000 young people in Australia. ADHD is often missed as people get older and evidence indicates that there are about 665,000 adults in Australia with ADHD. That is a total of almost 1 million people in Australia.

Children with ADHD are at an increased risk of having disciplinary problems and falling behind at school. Adolescents with ADHD have an increased risk of car accidents and are more likely to smoke cigarettes and abuse drugs, and are at an increased risk of mental health problems. Adults with ADHD are at an increased risk of physical and mental health problems including drug or alcohol abuse, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, marital and relationship difficulties as well as employment problems.
Research shows that more than 40% of young people with ADHD experience moderate to severe difficulties with school or work, more than 30% report moderate to severe difficulties with friends and nearly 50% have moderate to severe difficulties with their family.
Not surprisingly the wide-reaching effects of ADHD can lead to feelings of embarrassment, frustration, hopelessness, disappointment, and loss of confidence. Getting a diagnosis of ADHD is often an enormous source of relief. It helps you understand that you or your child are not to blame and the difficulties you or they have been experiencing are the symptoms of ADHD and not the result of personal weakness or a character flaw.
Getting successful treatment for ADHD will probably change your life, or your child’s life, and the lives of people around you.

New research, published in The Journal of Developmental and Behavioural Pediatrics last month, has shown that a simple 2-minute questionnaire can help detect autism in toddlers. Research indicates that about 1% of children have Autism in Australia. Like all children, every child with Autism is unique, however there are core symptoms characterised by differences in behaviour, social interaction, communication and sensory processing. Every person is affected differently, and whilst some people with Autism also have an intellectual impairment or disability, some people have average or above-average intelligence. People with Autism often experience additional challenges and problems like ADHD, Anxiety and Depression are particularly common.
In the past, treatment for ADHD has been limited to stimulant. However prior research has shown that the effects of medications tend to decrease after 2 years of use and may also cause side-effects such as anxiety, nausea and difficulties with sleep.
Neuroscientist Michael Merzenich looks at one of the secrets of the brain's incredible power: its ability to actively re-wire itself. He's researching ways to harness the brain's plasticity to enhance our skills and recover lost function.
